Sustainability and social responsibility are increasingly valued by consumers and employees of organizations. In this regard, more market force has been secured for impact businesses, highlighting this model in recent years.

We can say, then, that companies are experiencing a new era of purpose and opportunities.

But what exactly are impact businesses, how do they operate, and how can one start becoming one of them? If you’ve come here with a desire to implement changes in your company, whether internal or external, I invite you to reflect with me on the new possible paths.

Impact businesses: generating financial, environmental, and social value

More than just financial returns, impact businesses are concerned with assuming their responsibility in creating and addressing the impacts they generate in the world, whether positive or negative.

The fact that your company exists already creates some impact by itself.

From this point forward, they commit to improving the well-being of everything within their reach. These are models that seek to generate financial, social, and environmental value.

Of course, a single company is unlikely to achieve all sustainable development goals alone.

Therefore, it’s not about setting unattainable goals to completely eliminate negative impact on the planet. Instead, it’s about how we can begin to reduce negative impacts and create a value chain for all involved.

The first step: find your purpose

Committing to positive impacts can be a lengthy process that involves recognizing your values and how your company affects people’s lives, both directly and indirectly, within and outside of it. So, ask yourself: what is your purpose?

By understanding your calling and how you can act more positively on the planet, a new path of possibilities begins to unfold: new products and services aimed at social and environmental well-being, projects that help communities thrive, creating a healthier and more inclusive environment for your employees—there are many ways.

Possible changes can be collaborative

A key component of this process can be collaborating with other stakeholders who share the same vision for the future and purpose. As we mentioned earlier: shifting the course of things individually will be a tougher journey.

Faced with so many systemic challenges, finding ways to generate shared value can be the necessary turning point for organizations to move towards more effective, comprehensive, and assertive solutions.

The desire to change the narrative of your business can be the starting point to connect with potential investors and partners who seek the same objective.

Just take the first step I mentioned earlier, remember?

Deeper relationships with other stakeholders can generate innovative solutions together and create positive returns for all parties involved, ensuring that the effects can be shared in the long term.
